"The friendliest village in Devon!"
Community Shop

Dalwood’s thriving village shop is a triumph of community spirit and enterprise. It was set up over five years ago, and is run entirely by volunteers. It is really a mini-supermarket, and aims to supply everything that villagers and visitors need. As well as a large selection of groceries, toiletries and cleaning items, we have a varied off-licence, sweets and ice-creams, cheese, bacon and ham, delicious locally-supplied meat and fish, and fresh free-range eggs from a village farm.
During the summer we stock sun-cream, barbecues, charcoal and lots of locally-produced goodies for ‘take home’ presents. In the winter we sell lots of cough mixture, but also Christmas food, cards and decorations.
Newspapers and magazines are available daily, but to order only (it’s too difficult to anticipate demand otherwise). If you are holidaying in Dalwood and would like to order papers please call into the shop when you get here (you can order papers to start the following day).
The shop is located in the centre of the village, and is open 364 days a year (we take Christmas Day off). Hours are 8.30am to 6pm on weekdays; 8am to 4pm on Saturdays; and 8.30am to 12.30pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Our phone number is 01404 881200
Dalwood Community Shop goes “Green”
As a Community Shop we are very aware of our environment and after a discussion at the AGM, the Shop will go Plastic Bag Free on the 2nd June. We hope to celebrate this at an informal event with the local press present at 1030 - why not come along and support us?!
We have had a lot of assistance with this concept and we hope our customers will fully support the idea.
Customers will have the choice of using their own bags or purchasing attractive calico bags. These are based on designs created last year by Jill Hewer. We have obtained a grant from SDF Blackdown Hills for the cost of materials and Jill and others will make them up. Because of the grant the cost is subsidised and the price will be 50p compared to a similar bag from the Co-Op of 99p! There will also be a paper bag option.
To complement this green initiative we now stock a selection of “Fair Trade” teas and sugars from Sainsburys. We will increase this product range as more items become available.
