Community Shop

View of shop

Dalwood’s thriving village shop is a triumph of community spirit and enterprise.   It was set up over five years ago, and is run entirely by volunteers. It is really a mini-supermarket, and aims to supply everything that villagers and visitors need.   As well as a large selection of groceries, toiletries and cleaning items, we have a varied off-licence, sweets and ice-creams, cheese, bacon and ham, delicious locally-supplied meat and fish, and fresh free-range eggs from a village farm.

During the summer we stock sun-cream, barbecues, charcoal and lots of locally-produced goodies for ‘take home’ presents. In the winter we sell lots of cough mixture, but also Christmas food, cards and decorations.

Newspapers and magazines are available daily, but to order only (it’s too difficult to anticipate demand otherwise).   If you are holidaying in Dalwood and would like to order papers please call into the shop when you get here (you can order papers to start the following day).

The shop is located in the centre of the village, and is open 364 days a year (we take Christmas Day off).   Hours are 8.30am to 6pm on weekdays; 8am to 4pm on Saturdays; and 8.30am to 12.30pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Our phone number is 01404 881200

Dalwood Community Shop goes “Green”

As a Community shop we are very aware of our environment and after discussions at our AGM it was decided the Shop would go “plastic bag free” on the 2nd June 2008. There has been a lot of publicity about plastic bag free shopping and we hope we can make a contribution in our own small way.

Customers have the choice of using their own bags, buying a paper option or purchasing an attractive Dalwood Shop calico bag. They are based on a design and made by Jill Ewer who lives in the Village. The idea has been enthusiastically supported by residents and visitors and over 150 have been sold so far. We obtained grants for the materials from the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) for the initial production but now they are self-sustaining.

To complement this green initiative we now stock a selection of Free Trade Teas, Coffees and Sugars. We have also added to our variety of locally produced items, these include delicious Jams, Chutneys and Biscuits. We also sell a range of good quality handmade soaps made with natural ingredients and scented with essential oils. All these items make excellent small presents. Where we can we hope to increase our support to our local suppliers and the environment.

An update

Earlier this year Sainsbury's advised the shop they would no longer be supporting small shops like ourselves.  At the Shop AGM it was agreed to approach the Co-Operative Society to supply us with their own branded products. The Co-Op were more than happy to supply and support us where they can. They have a strong ethical philosophy and we can continue to stock their Fair Trade  products.  Their household items are also environment aware.

We welcome Shelagh Fearnley as a new Committee member.

As it was so successful last year , it has been decided to repeat the Miles Tea and The Shop Cream Tea. The date is Monday 09th November. between 2.pm and 4.pm in the Village Hall.  There will be tea sampling and a traditional cream tea Teas an fancy goods will be available for sale.  Please make a note of the date for a very enjoyable afternoon.
