"The friendliest village in Devon!"
Dalwood Dolphins once again competed in the May Bank Holiday 72-mile raft race on the River Wye, their 16th attempt at silverware! Held over three days, the race was particularly gruelling, with strong winds and heavy rain making it the toughest race in years. The Dolphins did not help their cause by badly damaging the raft on the first day, but after a three hour rebuild on the river bank they went on to finish 14th overall. For their dedication to getting back on the water and completing the race they won the Endurance and Raftmanship Award, the trophy that most reflects the spirit of the race.
The Raft Club, centred on the Tuckers Arms in Dalwood, was once again raising money for local causes. This year they are collecting specifically for a highly specialised powered wheelchair for Jimbo Gould, a local lad, just 17 years old, who as a quadriplegic urgently needs equipment to enrich his lifestyle and allow him as much independence as possible.
Over the years, the Raft Club has collected in excess of £30,000 for local causes. Further contributions to the wheelchair fund are very welcome, pledges can be made to David Dower or John Gostling.
